I’ve bought so much more than 5, but I’ve also sold damn near everything I own. I have a terrible habit of shopping for someone I’m not, a size smaller (cos I’ll just lose weight, despite the fact it hasn’t happened yet), or super fancy (I haven’t been on a night out since 2019) or just… doesn’t suit me but I want it to. I tried rule of 5 at the start of the year and realised I couldn’t only add 5 things because that would leave me with literally only 5 things to wear! So I’m spending the year selling (distressingly, often new with tags) everything that I don’t or can’t wear and then spending that on a decent base wardrobe that fits. My wardrobe usage is now up past 64% and I’m actually getting dressed most days (not just throwing on gym clothes). My wardrobe is quite a bit smaller than it was too and I’ve spent a bit on a small sustainable brand (natural fibres, small batches, full transparency, they’re ace) so my wardrobes less tat too. I think next year I’ll be able to do 5 no bother, this year I’m just trying to get my foundations sorted!
absolutely love this. You have great insight here - cant wait to hear what your foundational wardrobe looks like at the end of the year. How cleansing to start again! We make the mistake of buying for what we're not so often. Ive managed to give that up now - I also find as i get older that a looser fit is much more flattering than a tight one. So encouraging you're up to 64% wardrobe usage too. Thats a triumph.
i have a somewhat similar experience in that i rebought much of my wardrobe a few years ago when i got smaller. then perimenopause kicked in, and i am having to sell and reinvest,
esp in pants. i am also traveling a lot this year which is my biggest shopping trigger, so needless to say i am not pleased with my numbers this year!
I have bowel disease so my weight fluctuates, since diagnosis there’s 5 stone difference between my lightest and heaviest, it’s somewhat stable the last year but then I had a flare in March and shot up a stone. I’ve been buying linen trousers from Beyond Nine, they’re meant to be worn anytime but also accommodate a pregnancy and they’ve been brilliant. Rare to find an elasticated waistband that doesn’t feel frumpy!
that must be tough and i’m glad you’ve found pants that work! tbh i’ve begun to find most elastic waistbands quite uncomfortable. even when they are my true size or a size up, i don’t like the way elastic hugs my midsection, esp after a meal.
I have only bought one new thing! However I was gifted a brand new scarf for my birthday in Jan which I was actually really annoyed about because I didn’t need a scarf AT ALL, let alone a brand new one, but it was a gift so what can you do, you have to grit your teeth and say thank you.
Other than that, I bought the pair of boots I’ve been obsessed with (and saving up for) since last summer and I’m delighted and in love with them. And I haven’t really struggled too much so far.
What’s harder is cutting down on second hand because what I’m realising is that I have been relying on secondhand to get my shopping “hit” but what I’m trying to do is a) think very very carefully before buying and b) buy actual vintage not three-years-ago high street.
And I’m sewing! Doing a lot of alterations and repurposing of old clothes. :)
I haven’t bought anything yet. Was going to buy a linen dress, but decided to keep looking for something Second Hand (and haven’t looked, haha). Every time I think of buying something, I ask myself if it’s worth breaking the no-buy streak I’ve had since September (!) and it invariably isn’t. BUT lest I sound superhuman: I haven’t counted clothing I received as gifts (from my parents). I needed a loophole in the first year to convince myself to try it and it was a success in the sense that I only bought five new items myself (compared to 30+ the year before). This year, I’m upping the ante by limiting myself to four Second hand items and four gifts plus my five. And I think I might not need all of them, since it’s already May and I really don’t feel like shopping? So while the gifts may technically constitute cheating, they have absolutely helped achieve the end goal, so I’m ok with it. And I’m really happy to see that it gets easier and helps me consume less (not just clothes)
Love these tactics. I think you've got shopping paralysis which I got this time last year - it's quite helpful! Gifts are another matrix, it's very hard to turn them down or send them back. I do hope turning off the consumption habits is paying dividends in other ways 💪🏼
I sold over half my wardrobe last year after being laid up from surgery for months. I lived in 3 outfits during that time, all being pants and a sweater. I had plenty of time to think and realized that even before the surgery, I wore pants and a sweater most of the time. So, I decided that would be my every day uniform. For the rule of 5, I fleshed out my pants and sweaters so I would have some nicer outfits for work, using a mix of new and consignment pieces. The older pieces that were no longer nice enough for work have been retired for home and street wear. When they become too old for that, I can wear them in the garden. It's probably the most efficient wardrobe I have ever had and I love it! The rule of 5 keeps me focused, and I dress up my outfits with vintage jewelry, scarves, jackets, and shoes.
I haven't bought anything new, but I have bought more than my share of old things. Like, really old: a skirt from the early 1900s, a 1920s dress and a 1940s trouser suit, among others. I don't feel bad or guilty, because I can't imagine that buying these things contributes to someone else buying new stuff. It feels that these antique / proper vintage garments exist on a different playing field than modern clothes. Obviously it's more complicated than that, because I have way too many clothes and I could get by with a lot less. I didn't NEED any of these old things, but I can most definitely tap into the WANT that Patrick Grant talks about. Tbh sometimes I feel that I'm more of a collector than a consumer. Sometimes I'm not sure if there is a difference between the two.
Wow! Everyone Keep going! Tiffanie, your experiences and those of your Substackers are SO inspiring. This Patrick Grant book looks interesting! ( I love Richard Andersons book, Bespoke, on Saville Row stories too which were a lockdown read highlight for me). Rose & I designed and made a jacket which we took to Fashion Revolution Mend in Public day recently where we did a demo on how to up cycling things from your existing wardrobes. I was able to use a floral second hand Scarf. Originally from a supermarket clothing line). Another braid trimmed version of the same jacket was made from Rose’s discarded drawing room curtains which she had carefully saved, unpicked, laundered and pressed until now. Not a bit like the Von Trapp family wardrobe either! We showed how to uo cycle the Pillowcase Short too at the same event. We are on a mission, as you know!
So far I’ve only bought one item. A pair of J Crew boyfriend jeans. ( from HEWI but they were new with tags) I’m wearing them with old cashmere jumpers and my ever faithful Adidas Gazelles or belted with a pretty blouse and a pair of second hand Jimmy Choo leopard print flats. ( I think I look great and I feel comfortable)
One S/H BNWT dress from Vinted which I may resell as I haven’t worn it and have lost weight so it’s now too big. I might treat it as fabric and turn it into a skirt instead?
A two-pack of black M&S leggings to replace two pairs which were literally in shreds. Does replacing like-for-like count as a purchase if you are throwing away the worn out things? They weren’t donate-able.
For the last three years I’ve been buying and wearing WoolandCo dresses. I bought a black one and did their 100 day challenge which got me €100 off the next dress. That first dress is now my gardening dress. Then I bought a blue one and green one.
These two dresses are my entire wardrobe. I wear them alternately. Haven’t worn anything else for nearly three years. One dress even went to a wedding when it was new (suitably blinged up). I wear them for boots-on flat-walking (I don’t do hills), and to the theatre. I put a T shirt underneath if it’s cold or a cardigan over the top. They last about 9 months before they start looking a bit weary (interesting use of wear-y).
I’ve never been much into fashion, wore a uniform for work for 25 years, and was the wrong shape for most off-the-peg clothes anyway.
I’ve also bought two pieces of beautiful slubby linen which will become smart trousers and a top. Not sure how to “count” this.
Is the linen fabric you are going to make into clothes yourself? This doesnt count. Ive just looked up the 100 day challenge on the Wooland dress - I love this. Its so good to know your style, to know what works and stick with it. The leggings count Im afraid. But honestly I think you are winning on the minimalist parsimony here so dont worry
Thanks. I bought the Sierra dress (three times). It’s a slightly heavier knit fabric, so the weight makes the tunic style hang better, and it’s good for layering. Also, POCKETS!!! They have a European hub, so they ship to the UK from the Netherlands (you need to look at the EU site). And if you buy one dress at a time it’s under the Customs threshold. About £130. Free returns. There are lots of people on Instagram doing the challenge at any one time.
It’s definitely about knowing my style. Pretty minimalist and simple. I have a pair of navy trousers I wear under the blue dress sometimes, so it’s more of a Gudrun Sjödén look, if you know what I mean.
Yes, I’ll sew with the linen. More GS style, I think.
Hi, I’ve only purchased one item of clothing (vintage dress from a charity shop) since February 24. I’m going to try and keep it to that unless I absolutely need something. I’ve been going shopping in my own wardrobe and finding pieces that I haven’t worn for years and started wearing them again.
I didn’t buy anything for ages - I felt I was scared to! But now I bought a pair of jeans and a bikini. Quite boring but I sold a ton of things on Vinted and these were the holes in my wardrobe. I’ve definitely bought too much preloved stuff tho - I need to work on that xx
I've bought three items, two of them secondhand, and one of which (a vintage jumper) I slightly regret. It's a very nice wool jumper but it's turning out to be a little too warm for my climate (Melbourne, Australia) and I haven't worn it at all (but I wore my other new jumper 11 times already)....hopefully as winter deepens in the southern hemisphere. I'll find a use for it, or I may consider selling it as it's too nice to be stowed away in a closet. I think there's a lesson here in not shopping too far out of season (I bought the jumper in summer and felt FOMO about not buying it).
I'm saving a spot for running shoes (very boring purchase but the soles of mine are coming apart) so that leaves me with one precious spot for something I actually love...it is hard when I love clothing and design and even harder when I see small designers and makers I want to support. That Mother of Pearl suit is lovely and I hope to be able to show the same kind of support to designers too.
Well, my first quarter sucked as (it was summer here) I had to replace some well-worn tank tops. I bought much better quality but the sale price had me buying 4 different colors and a tshirt. I've been wearing them all but that tanked (haha) my budget. Slowed right down since then.
I'm now looking at my winter clothes and going to try having a couple of tops altered.
I’ve purchased 3 new items (yikes) and 1 secondhand. One of my 3 is a bag I’ve been lusting after since September, and decided to gift myself this year for my birthday. I’ve also realized I have a thing for pants. Trousers, jeans, you name it and I’m drawn to them. I’m trying to focus on filling out my wardrobe with more tops, since that seems to be where there’s a hole in my wardrobe. May return one of my 3, since it’s a cardigan, and I won’t be using it anytime soon. If I’m still drawn to it in the fall, then I’ll purchase it.
This is my first attempt at the Rule of Five Challenge. I've been blogging about slow fashion for a few years...but this year I'm testing my own resolve. And it's been fun. Mostly. Ha.
So far I've purchased two new pieces: a bag from COS and a jacket I fell for when shopping with an old friend. I didn't like it as much as I should have done, so I bought some chunky buttons and changed up the buttons. I'm hoping even though it was not a "love, love" purchase I will still get wear out of it
I've been practising thrifting and shopping consignment. I've never been a good second-hand shopper. I have no patience for sifting through crowded racks of clothes. But I've discovered two lovely consignment shops with curated collections and a funky vintage store that are fun to visit, even if it's only to chat and natter about clothes. I bought a vintage Levis vest, exactly what I was looking for since I saw one on the Me + Em website. And a pink men's thrifted shirt. That darned shirt has been on my "want" list since 2022. Ironic that I found it on my first day of thrifting.
But best of all I've started reporting my progress on my blog and lots of readers have joined me in the challenge. That has been kind of great.
The whole process has kind of done in my affiliate links which I use to fund my blog. But my husband says that since blogging is a hobby and not my real income, I might get more satisfaction out of paying for the blog myself and staying true to my principles. My income has been dwindling anyway since I jumped on the slow fashion bandwagon a few years ago.
Anyway..that's my quarterly report, Tiffanie. Thanks for the inspiration and all the great links and advice.
P.S. A reader of my blog wants to know about her sports gear, cycling shorts and shirts that are wearing out. She is a committed fitness buff and wonders if her cycling gear can be considered underwear and not count in. her five things. Any thoughts?
Thank you for all this info Sue and good shopping! Sportswear is difficult as - like trainers - it does need updating. I think if she is a 'committed' cyclist she can run an extra sportswear account. Im going to put my finger in the air and say she can run an extra 'three' sports menu, but those pieces need to be as durable as possible!
I’ve bought one thing so far - a black linen dress from Posse for a February holiday which I wore every night and felt great in - I remember the days when I’d take a different outfit for every night of my holiday! It should serve me well for many holidays and (hopefully) warm evenings in the UK.
I’ve now tried on a pair of Victoria Beckham trousers so many times in Selfridges that I think I risk being banned 😂 I’ve been thinking about them for well over 2 months and they’ll be my next buy.
I’ve bought so much more than 5, but I’ve also sold damn near everything I own. its such a boon if you can actually sew - or knit. This is a triumph Franki, and enjoy those shoes.
Yes!! I’ve done the same: justifying my Vinted shopping with the amount I’m selling on there. I’m trying to be more mindful x

Yes, I do! The 1920s dress is quite fragile so I probably can't wear it very often, but the other pieces are sturdy and perfectly wearable.

if they survive a 2 week lust period you prob really do want them....
Oh dear 😆
